DJ Jimmi Riggz – Calgary Turntablist

I met Greg (aka Jimmi Riggz) at the 10@10 hip hop night I went to last month. After Greg’s set was over he made is way over to the bar and my table wasn’t far off. So I jumped up started to chat with him and told him about this blog, to my surprise he said he had heard of it! I asked him if he would be up for a quick interview and he was down. My conversation with Greg had a lot of laughs which made it one of the most fun interviews to date :). Here’s what Greg AKA Jimmi Riggz had to say.

*Note: I could have put the iso down for this particular shot, but I was shooting in many different lighting situations quickly due to the stage lighting and other lighting in the venue, so I just left it at 10000 to ensure sharp photos.

1. Alright so what’s your name ?
My real name is Greg and my stage name is “Jimmi Riggz”.

2. So where are you from ?
Originally I’m from Dundas, Ontario and I moved out here 6 years ago and I’ve been in Calgary pretty much ever since.

3. Why did you move to Calgary of all places ?
Well originally I moved to Jasper and then it was like, your not going any where, your having fun but your going any where. (laughter)

4. Do you like living in Calgary ?
Ya, I like it for lots of reasons. You know obviously works good and then the (hip hop) scene’s pretty good for the most part. And I like it because it’s close to mountains and all that jazz. So like if you wanna get away for the weekend your just an hour or 2 away from dope spots.

5. So what do you like to do for fun ?
I like skateboarding, I like DJ’ing, I like just getting out camping, whatever, exploring seeing new things and chill’n.

6. So if you had to describe Calgary to someone what would you say ?
I would say it’s a good spot. If you want to get away from your whereabouts and want to meet likeminded people it’s the perfect spot to go because 90% of the people you meet are not from Calgary and at some point in their life, in all our lives we have the same thought of “Hey I need to get out of here”. So in that way when you meet someone you almost have something in common with them right away. So you meet a lot of nice people who at one point in their life where in the same mentality as you, which I like.

Rob: Hey that’s so true, awesome! I love it, I love it.

7. What else do you think the city has to offer for someone just coming to the city for the first time ?
Well theres great opportunities, I mean if your looking for work there is plenty of that. There’s good schools, there’s U of C, there’s SAIT . . . (pause), Ummm, I don’t even know the rest, I didn’t even go to school here man (laughter).

8. So how did you hear about this night and how did you get involved with it ?
Well I heard about it awhile back and I don’t know, I got at Beni cuz I seen videos on youtube and whatever and just heard it was a good place to meet people, network and I don’t know, some real (hip hop)heads that are into music here so I thought why not check this place out. Then I was talking with Beni and they don’t get very many turntablists through here so he was on board to have me out, so here I am.

Random Guy: Yo! You put on a good show buddy!

Greg: Thanks man, thank you.

9. Alright that’s cool, so is there anything else you’d like to add ? Like do you have a website or anything like that people can find you at ?
Naw.

Rob: Twitter ?
Greg: Naw haha.

Rob: Anything ?
Greg: Naw.

Rob: Nothing! ?
Greg: Haha naw I don’t, I’m old school. (laughter)

10. Well have you ever ridden a horse ?
No.

Rob: That’s it!
Greg: Alright. . . I almost did! can I put that?

Rob: Haha ya, how did you almost ride a horse ?
Greg: Well I was supposed too, but then it just never happen. We were up at the ranch and then it just never happen.

Rob: Haha why ? Why didn’t it happen ? You got scared ?
Greg: I dont know, I think we got drunk. (laughter)

Rob: Haha ok, well that’s good. You don’t want to ride a horse drunk. (laughter)

Greg: You don’t have to put that in haha.

Rob: No I’m definitely gonna put that in! (laughter).

Thanks taking the time to talk to me Greg! And that guy who interrupted the interview was right, you put on a good show! 😉

Ryan – 10@10 Hip Hop in Calgary

A DJ friend of mine (Mista Wilson) set up an introduction to Ryan through his friend Marie. I met Marie and Ryan in front of the Ubu Lounge a little before people starting showing up for a hip hop night that Ryan and his friends put on. Ryan told me a little bit about the night and showed me around the venue quickly. After a quick look around Ryan and I went back to the street to conduct our interview. Here is what he had say!
* A few more photos from the night follow the interview.

1. Where are you from?
I’m from Calgary

2. Have you lived here all your life?
I was born in Calgary

3. Nice.  Do you like living in Calgary?
Yeah, I enjoy living in Calgary.

4. What is it about Calgary that you like?
Well, like, even with a lot of other Canadians too who are like born and raised somewhere else, like, there’s a lot of nostalgic feeling for the place where you were born, and the place where you are familiar with , like most of my friends.  For me that’s Calgary.

5. What do you like to do for fun?
I like to listen to music, watch sports, chill with the hommies.

6. So you are putting on this night.  Why don’t you tell me a bit about the night that we are at? How did it start?
It started as an idea from my boy Rock Media about creating a night where we invite 10 local hip hop acts down to do quick sets and kinda like a sign up and open mic format.  And it started with that and the way it grew from that point which is just kinda natural within itself.

7. How long have you guys been doing this night?
I believe this is our 24th month or 22nd month? I’m off on that one so I don’t know

Rob: Around there!

Around there, if that (Laughter)

8. So has it always been done here?
Yeah,  it’s always been done here at the Ubu Lounge here in Theatre Grand.

9. How long do you plan to do this night?  Is it gonna be a long standing thing?
Um, you know at this point…It’s not even the foresight, you know.  We never even thought it’d be this long. At the same time, it’s hard to envision local hip hop without it.

10. So what else is happening in the City as far as the hip hop community goes?
I don’t know, but from 10 @ 10 being a hub, it’s kinda nice to see like, as you invite more artists down to perform, it’s different artists meeting other artists, and different visual artists meeting other visual artists or photographers meeting artists as well, ya know. And then seeing the collaborations even from the events.  Seeing, you know, an act from one month, with an act from a different month doing a song together and your seeing kinda like those kinda fruitations of the culture. It’s showing more growth and you know than whats within the realm of my reach.  Cause there could still be great stuff being created anywhere, but if I’m not hearing it is it my hip hop or no?

11. So how do you get the acts?
People who attend kinda see what we’re doing and how it’s being done.  And they send us an e-mail at 10at10showcase@gmail.com or they hit us up on twitter @10at10calgary.  And then we ask them to send us a set list some links to their media and they we just kinda go through the email list.  And we do try to give everyone an opportunity to perform, so at all levels we encourage people to send music in.

12. Alright cool. So if you had to describe Calgary to someone what would you say?
It’s hard to describe, because I’m not even a travelled guy too much.  I travelled a little bit and it really opened up my eyes about what the world is like.  But Calgary’s just like, Midwest, big city with small town hospitality and that’s pretty much it.

13. Is there anything else you can think of that you’d like to add, that people might want to know about your night?
Since the conception of this, we’ve actually ran this free of charge for almost over a year and a half now.  So it’s just here to develop the hip hop community of Calgary.  We’re just creating a place where people can practice their craft, promote their craft, and diversify their collaborations coming out of their own art.  So come on down.  Tell your friends who are talented, we don’t have to all be bedroom rappers and producers and not you know, create something as a city.

14. Cool, last question. Have you ever ridden a horse?
Yes I have ridden a horse.

Alright, that’s it!

* Thanks for taking the time to talk to me Ryan! I’ll see you next month 😉 Also, thanks to DJ Mista Wilson & Marie for the introduction to Ryan. I would also like to add that I stuck around for a couple hours to check out the night and it was super good and had a lot of cool people attending. 10@10 is definitely worth checking out!

Dwyane – Ontario Guy Turned Fresh Air Loving Cyclist

It doesn’t get any easier finding people for this blog than it did today. I just closed my car door and turned to the sidewalk and saw Dwyane hopping on his bike to go for a little cruise. I politely stopped him and explained to him what I was up to. At first Dwyane was a little reluctant to have his picture taken, but I showed him the website and told him a bit more about it and he gave me an enthusiastic “Lets do it”. This of course made my day 🙂 Here is what Dwyane had to say.

Dwyane - People of Calgary famous - Rob Moses Photography - Canadian Celebrity Bokeh
Camera: Canon 5Diii & 135L – Setting: 1/250th // f2 // ISO 100

1. Where are you from Dwayne?
Ontario.

2. Why did you moved to Calgary of all places?
Work related.

3. Do you like living in Calgary?
Yes and no. I like living here, it’s just a little expensive.

4. What do you like about Calgary?
Fresh Air! And the mountains. Ya you can’t beat that man.

5. And what do you like to do for fun? Other than ride your bike?
I like to go up to the mountains, get away from the city. Ya know, just be with nature. You can’t beat that man, it’s beautiful.

6. If you had to describe Calgary to someone what would you say?
A happening city, a growing city, a new city with potential.

7. Have you ever ridden a horse?
No, YES YES! I have. Not successfully, but I have (laughter).

* One of the coolest things about Dwyane was that after the interview was over he had a few questions for me and we continued our conversation. I kind of wished I was still recording, but either way it was a nice conversation with a nice guy. Thanks Dwyane!

Laetiti – A Nice Girl at Uptown 17th

I went for coffee with a friend of mine today and we hit a couple art galleries. While we were on our way to the coffee shop I saw this girl I thought would be good for the blog, however we had just got downtown and it was not the time, so I didn’t bother asking her. After coffee and checking out a few good galleries, inspiration hit me to find some one for the blog. At first we took a stroll down Stephen Avenue and I asked one girl who looked cool, but she nicely infromed me that she wasn’t from Calgary, nor did she currently live in Calgary, DARN! Our parking was up, so we decided to head across town to Uptown 17th Ave to try our luck.

17th was great! We did a Pepsi taste test and won a couple Pepsi’s :). So with Pepsi’s in hand we started wandering down the street. I asked a couple girls sitting on a bench, but either they didn’t understand english or did not live in Calgary. When asked if they lived here they looked confused and just shook their heads no haha. So we cross the street and who do I see? The first girl I thought to ask all the way across town in the beginning of our outing! So I walk up and tell her what I’m doing and she’s into it! Here is what Laetiti had to say.

Laetiti - Celebrity- People of Calgary Famous - Rob Moses Photography - photographer
Camera: Canon 5Diii & 135L – Settings: 1/500th // f2 // ISO 100

1. Where are you from?
I’m from here, Calgary.

2. Have you lived here all of your life?
I have, yes.

3. Do you like living in Calgary?
Ah ya in general.

4. What is it about Calgary that you like?
I like how it’s close to the Rockies, it’s got a lot of nature. People aren’t as nice here as other places, but in general their pretty nice. It’s got some cool neighbourhoods.

5. What do you like to do for fun?
I like hiking a lot, I like running, I like calculus & cooking.

Rob: Calculus! Nice 🙂

6. If you had to describe Calgary to some one, what would you say?
Umm, does it have to be good or?

Rob: No it could be whatever, whatever you think, whatever you would say to somebody.

Laetiti: I think it’s a trending city with a lot of things happening. Probably in the next 10 years it’ll be an even better city than it is.

7. Have you ever ridden a horse?
I have not.

Thank you for talking to me Laetiti! 😉

Can’t Miss That

Yesterday there was a street festival in the city of Calgary. It was called The Lilac Festival and took over almost half of a downtown street! I’m not sure how many blocks it was, but it was massive! I went down and had my camera along (as always) in the hopes I might find some one for this blog. I had planned to meet up with some one from Twitter, but it didn’t work out and in the end I was happy enuf to shoot a some street shots. Here is my favourite one from the day. You could miss this girl walking down the street with that dress on! I love bright colorful clothing like that for street photography shots, it just commands your attention, well it does mine anyhow 😉

Laura & Kyle – 2 Cool People I Met Behind a Pub

I met these two quite a while back but never got to posting their interview because the picture didn’t turn out. I guess I should check my shots a little closer in these types of situations haha. Anyhow, they were really nice so I decided to post it anyway, sorry for the poor picture quality guys!

So one night when I was walking around the Eau Clair Market area downtown looking for people for this blog I saw these two behind a pub that is by the market. They seemed to be having quite the little chat, but at this point in my night I had been turned down twice already and I was determined, so I interrupted them as nicely as I could and explained to them what I was doing. Clearly they agreed to talk to me and here is what they had to say 🙂

These 2 - Rob Moses Photography - People of Calgary

1. Where are you from?
– Laura: Nova Scotia

– Rob: BC

2. Why did you move to Calgary of all places?
– Laura: I was tired of Nova Scotia and I came out to work in the mountains for the summer and I ended up loving it and all my friends followed me out here, so I stayed and I love it!

– Rob: My girlfriend at the time lived here so that kinda ment I had to live here (laughter).

– ME: Ok, well that makes sense haha.

– Rob: School as well, but you know haha.

3. Do you like living in Calgary?
– Rob: As opposed to where I was living before? or just in general?

ME: Just in general.

– Rob: Ya, it’s nice.

– Laura: I also love it, lost of good music scenes, good people, mountains, awesome!

4. What do you like to do for fun?
– Laura: Go to the Ship & Anchor and drink pints! (laughter).

ME: Nice!

– Rob: I don’t really have fun, sooo?

– Laura: He’s in school. (laughter)

ME: Darn! haha.

5. If you had to describe Calgary to someone, what would you say?
– Rob: Oooooh, ummm, to be honest I’d say it’s flat and windy and brown or white, one of the two and that would be how I would describe it.

ME: That is an accurate description (except for summer when Calgary is beautiful), (Laughter).

– Rob: It’s not a very favourable one, but accurate haha.

ME: What would you say Laura?

– Laura: I would say it’s very multi cultural and lots of nice people from all over the world, because Calgary wasn’t as big as it is on it’s own. And lots of opportunity for jobs and just good people. I miss the water though, definitely miss the ocean.

ME: I also miss the water!

– Laura: Where are you from?

ME: I am from Vancouver.

– Laura: Ahhh, ya it (Calgary) had a beach it would be perfect.

ME: Totally.

6. Ok so just to wrap this up, have you ever ridden a horse?
– Rob: Mmmm ya. I can’t remember when last, but I know at some point.

ME: Ok, have you (Laura) ever ridding a horse?

– Laura: I have, I used to take ridding lessons and I did in Banff on a trail ride, it was awesome!

7. Nice! Is there anything else you would like to add?
– Laura: It was nice to meet you and we gotta get back to work haha.

– Rob: Flames suck! (Laughter)

– Laura: GO MONTREAL!

ME: Thanks guys, I appreciate it!

Waiting for Trains

I went out on a street shooting mission today and I got a bunch of good photos that I am happy with. This one is was the very last shot I took before I hopped on the train home and is probably my favourite from the day.

On a fun little side note I bumped in to Kris while I was enjoying a coffee on Stephen Ave. The more I go out and bump into people I know the more I feel like a real Calgarian, dare I say I am becoming one ;).

Robin – Short & Sweet

Haha Ok, if you have read this blog for the past few weeks then you might find this interview a little amusing. I’ll leave it at that for now and fill you in on who exactly Robin is after the interview. Some of you more clever people might be able to guess who she might be. Here is what Robin had to say.

Robin - People of Calgary - Rob Moses Photography
Camera: Canon 1DiiN & 50L – Settings: 1/25th // f1.2 // ISO 800

1. Where are you from?
Calgary.

2. Have you lived here all your life?
No. (Robin is originally from Nova Scotia, Canada)

3. Do you like living in Calgary?
Yes I do.

4. What do you like to do for fun?
I like to mountain bike.

5. If you had to describe Calgary to some one, what would you say?
It’s a friendly place to meet friendly people.

6. Have you ever ridden a horse?
Yes.

7. Anything you’d like to add?
No.

So if that interview sounded a little familiar there are two reasons for that. One, it contains only a selection of the standard questions (interview took place before I decided to switch up the format a bit) and two, it had the exact same vibe as the “Quick Answer Kris” interview. Funny thing is, Robin is Kris’s girlfriend! haha. I found the similarities in answering style rather amusing 🙂

Thanks Robin!

*It should be noted that this picture does Robin no justice.

Amber Schinkel – Global TV News Anchor

A couple weeks ago I was watching the morning news on Global TV and saw Amber anchoring the news as I so often do. I thought to my self it would be cool if she’d do the blog. So on a whim I decided to send her a message on twitter to see if she would be into it. To my pleasant surprise she was! I met Amber at a Starbucks and we hung out and had a little chat before we got going on the blog questions. She was extremely nice and couldn’t have been more sweet. I can see why Amber is where she currently is in her broadcasting career. Amber is clearly great at her job and really is just a good person and very nice to be around.

Thank you very much for taking the time to talk to me Amber! 😀

Amber Schinkel - People of Calgary - Global TV News - Rob Moses Photography
Camera: Canon 5Diii & 135L – Settings: 1/400th // f2 // ISO 100

1. Where are you from?
I am from Cochrane Alberta, which is located outside of Calgary, north west of Calgary.

2. Why did you moved to Calgary of all places?
I grew up on a farm just outside of Cochrane and through my work it was just great to be able to come back to my home city. I moved away and I did small towns and worked my way up in my career through cities outside of Calgary, but it was nice to be able to come home.

3. Did you ever leave Alberta?
Yes, I lived in Swift Current Saskatchewan for two months and it was a good way to get my foot in the door for broadcasting. It was brutally cold, it was like December and January in Swift Current Saskatchewan. I wouldn’t recommend moving there at that time (laughter).

Rob: No, it doesn’t sound very pleasing haha.

4. How did you get your start? Did you start in radio or did you just go straight to TV?
I started in radio. I graduated from Mount Royal’s broadcasting program in 2006 and I started working for 660 News right out of school. I worked there for 5 months doing over night anchoring shifts and then I moved to Swift Current and was there for 2 months. I had done a school practicum for Global Lethbridge in Lethbridge and old my boss called me up and said there was an opportunity there so I packed my bags and went to Lethbridge and spent 2 years there before coming up to Global Calgary.

5. Wow, so that’s pretty good, I mean that seems pretty quick. Well I don’t know a lot about broadcasting, but that sounds fast to be where your at in your career now.
Absolutely, and timing is everything and so that really helped. And I worked really hard. I worked my way up the ladder in Lethbridge and then I started in a weather position in Calgary, that was the foot in the door for me here. And since then I have worked my way through a variety of positions and now I am a reporter and anchor for Global.

Rob: Good for you, that’s awesome.
Amber: Ya 🙂

6. So do you like living here in Calgary?
I actually live in Airdrie, just outside of Calgary. But I spend the brunt of my time in Calgary. And I do like Calgary, it’s a city that has a lot to offer. There’s alway activities going on downtown, like you said it’s got a huge arts scene, which I don’t think a lot of people realize. Our mountains are just on the doorsteps, which is incredible. There is just so much that Calgary has going for it, so it’s great to be able to call it home.

Rob: Agreed!

7. What do you like to do for fun?
I enjoy riding my horse. I grew up on a farm, so I still have my horse at my mom and dads farm and so I really enjoy doing that when I can. I like spending time with my family and my friends. And work takes up a good portion of my life (laughter), so I spend a lot of time with my work friends, which is nice.

8. If you had to describe Calgary to some one what would you say?
If I had to describe Calgary I would say that it is a very vibrant city and it’s not the “Cow Town” that everyone expects it to be. It has a lot of energy and there’s a lot of creative spirits here. And there is a lot of drive and initiative here as well. So I think it’s a really great city to be in for so many different people and for so many different reasons.

9. Anything else you’d like to add?
Calgary has some great restaurants. 🙂

* You can catch Amber on Global TV News Calgary in the mornings and on Twitter @AmberSchinkel.

Kris – Quick Answer Kris

The other night I met up with an old friend of mine from Vancouver who currently lives in Calgary and he introduced me to his friend Kris. I mentioned the blog and he agreed to answer a few of my questions. His answers are short and to the point. Nothing wrong with that haha 🙂

Thanks Kris!

* When I first started this blog I came up with a set of standard questions that I was going to use for everyone, but since I started doing it I feel like the blog will be better served to use those questions as more of a loose outline rather than standard questions. So from here on out I will be doing that. Here’s one of the last interviews with only those standard questions.
