Jeremy – Neighbour to the Stars!

Ok, so maybe “stars” is a bit of a stretch, like how my muscles are exactly like that of a professional wrestler’s haha. Alright, so maybe Jeremy isn’t the neighbour to any stars, but the neighbour of a hyper active photographer who walks up to strangers on the street, asks them to take their picture and to answer a bunch of his silly questions haha. Yes, Jeremy is MY neighbour and dare I say my friend.

Now the thing with interviewing Jeremy is I know him, so while conducting the interview I might not have asked him the follow up questions I normally would have. So I will tell you a bit about him. Jeremy is a writer for the Metro Newspaper and I don’t mind saying he is a very good one. He is also a father and by my calculations a freewheeling hipster of dad at that haha. This sleeve tattoo having, bearded baseball fanatic, bike riding in a suit dude is one cool guy and one of the best neighbours I have had the pleasure of living beside. Here is what Jeremy had to say :).

1. Where are you from?
A small town north of Edmonton.

Rob: What’s it called?

Jeremy: Morinville, Alberta.

2. So how did you end up in Calgary?
I came for journalism school in 2002, and just ended up staying.

Rob: Nice!

3. Do you like living in Calgary?
Ya I love it here, I love the people, the communities, the vibe of the city is good and ya, it’s an easy place, , or I shouldn’t say it’s an easy place, but it’s a good place to do creative work I find.

4. What do you like to do for fun?
Ahh, good question. I like photography, I like cycling and Calgary is getting better cycling infrastructure, so that’s good.

Rob: Even in the winter?

Jeremy: Ya! In the winter I get studded tires.

Rob: Nice! You get chains on the tires? (tongue in cheek 😉 )

Jeremy: No chains, (laughter) but studded tires.

Rob: So your a Calgary Stud basically?

Jeremy: Ya I guess so. (laughter)

Rob: You ride around town, “Check out the stud!” (laughter)

Jeremy: Well actually I shouldn’t say I have studded tires, I used to have them. The ones I have now don’t have studs, but they’re winter tires basically. Like you get winter tires for your car, these are winter tires for your bike.

Rob: Nice.

5. If you had to describe Calgary to some one, what would you say?
It’s an energetic city, a young city and a changing city.

6. Have you ever ridden a horse?
I have ridden a horse, just a few times, but not very well I don’t think and not for a long time! (laughter)

7. Anything you’d like to add?
I love Calgary, but wish it had a pro baseball team! I’d love to see that happen again one day.

Thanks for taking the time to talk to me Jeremy! See ya around the hood 😉

Thanks for stopping by, Rob

* I was in a bit of rush when I was talking to Jeremy and I totally forgot to get a body shot of him! I’ll get him in a street shot another day ;).

A Seat By The Pond

This is a pretty recent shot I took and is one of my favourite from recently 🙂

This spot is a particular favourite of mine in Calgary. The pond is in Princes Island Park and is a nice place to grab a seat and relax. I think theses 2 people would agree that this is the place to be :).

Kate – Toronto to Calgary

Today’s Calgary person was handed to me on a silver platter. Ok maybe not quite a silver platter, but I didn’t have to walk up to her on the street like I was a 16 year old trying to get her to buy me a case of beer! This little interaction was a set up. NICE 🙂 Anyhow, this is Kate and here is what she had to say.

1. Where are you from?
Originally Toronto.

2. Why did you moved to Calgary of all places?
We moved here because my husband got a job offer here and they offered to pay for the move. So we were like “Ok, well if we don’t like it we’ll leave”.

3. Do you like living in Calgary?
Yes. I miss Toronto, I miss the city, but we like the mountains, skiing, hiking and stuff. And the slower pace of life here.

4. What is it about Calgary that you like? Even though you kind of answered that already.
The stuff outside of the city, more than the city it’s self.

5. What do you like to do for fun?
Ski, well before baby (laughter and a look to her 1 year old daughter playing near by), hike, we like to go out with friends to bars, have people over, board games and stuff.

6. If you had to describe Calgary to some one, what would you say?
Friendly.

7. Have you ever ridden a horse?
Yes, ironically I used to horseback ride back in Toronto and I moved here and never found a barn.
Rob: What! That’s crazy! haha.
Kate: So yes I do ride.
Rob: Nice.

8. Anything you’d like to add?
We like the opportunities here, so that’s why we stayed. It’s home now.

* Thank you for talking to me Kate! 🙂

Nathan – Nicest Person Thus Far

My quest to find Calgary people to talk to about the city had gone smoother than it ever has tonight. I went downtown to a place called Eau Claire Market. It is a mall type place, but with more of a community feel. It has a lot of open area for sitting, coffee shops, restaurants, an art gallery, movie theatre gym and a bunch of random shops. It was there that I ran into Nathan. Amazingly he was the first person I approached about the blog, he was super nice and happy to talk to me. He did let me know he had only been living in Calgary for a year before we got started and I assured him that was just fine as I too had only been here a year :).

Thank you for being such a nice guy Nathan!

I went to school in Montreal and then I was looking for jobs and I came out west.

3. Do you like living in Calgary?
Love! Yes Calgary’s a good place.

4. What do you like to do for fun?
I am doing some volunteering at the Y right now. And aside from that, working out, going out for drinks with friends, relaxing watching movies, the usual stuff.

5. If you had to describe Calgary to some one, what would you say?
I’d say it is probably the most emerging, booming city in the western hemisphere. It’s amazing the possibilities you can have out here, it’s really nice.

6. Have you ever ridden a horse?
Yes, I fell off but yes haha.

7. Anything you’d like to add?
Ah no, I’m glad that I ran into you. This is Random, but I love it!
