This blog is dedicated to the good people that live in the city of Calgary, Alberta Canada. I moved to Calgary a year ago and before I moved here I had a lot of misconceptions about the city and the people that lived here. From the reputation of the city I had come to the conclusion that Calgary was a full on cowboy town filled with horse riding, cattle wrangling, Budwiser drinking country fokes all jammed together to make what appeared to be a city. Oh how I was wrong, and how happy to be wrong!
Since living in Calgary I have learned that the people who live here are really just like any where else in Canada/America. The whole cowboy town thing seems more of a tourism scheme than anything, except forย Stampedeย time when loads of people dresses up like cowboys or a modern day Daisy Duke.
I work as a photographer, so I meet a lot of people and I have found that almost everyone I meet is actually from some where else. The lure of jobs and a better quality of life has done Calgary well. The city is made up of people from all over Canada and the US and to my pleasant surprise there seems to be a larger than expected African and Asian Canadian population here too.
So on with the blog, I hope you enjoy it and the people on here.
Thanks for reading, Rob
* All photography on this blog is done by meย (Rob Moses).
like the concept of the blog
Thank you Doris. It should be a fun little project ๐
Ive always wanted to visit Canada so I look forward to your entries ๐
Cool! You should totally visit Canada sometime! I’d say the best places are Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal & Calgary in that order. I’ll keep a look out for your entries too ๐
Found you after you liked my blog, Rob, so of course I had to see who you were! I just moved to where I live (small town outside of Nelson, B.C.) called Procter. The publicity is always about the bigger places (not much about Procter on the web) and I’m finding out just how rich the smaller places in this area are. On my web I’m putting up interviews about people around the area and things that are different from Spain which is where I was living for the past 10 years. It’s a great way to get to know the people in the community and to start to feel like one belongs. ๐ Enjoy your adventure in Calgary.
Cool! I have spent A LOT of time in Nelson BC as we used to have some family that lived there. We came very, very close to moving there. However we couldn’t find a decent place to live haha. Nelson is a wonderful little town and I love it very much. I will be out that way this summer some time I am sure ๐ Enjoy YOUR adventure all the way from Spain! That’s so cool to hear about what your doing.
Hi Rob, Calgary is one city I haven’t had a chance to explore yet, but definitely want to. I’m looking forward to your thoughts on the city and your photos.
Thank you for stopping by and taking the time to comment! Yes you should definitely come check out Calgary some time! It’s nice in the summer ๐
Hi Rob, Thanks for visiting my blog and liking my post. Your photographs are beautiful, especially what I assume is Calgary at the top of your blog. Love the concept too! Good luck finding more people to interview. Look forward to following.
No problem! Thank you for visiting mine too! Oh and yes that is Calgary at the top ๐
Hey Rob, Thanks for the like on my blog. I’ve been to Calgary several times. I absolutely love Banff…beautiful there. Great blog and your photography is amazing!
Thank you so much! That’s cool you have been here. I love Banff too! So nice there. And thanks about my photography ๐ You are very kind to say such things ๐
What an awesome header photo you’ve posted Rob. I’m really keen to perfect night shots. Just got a new Canon S110 for Christmas…I could have picked a more mainstream camera but was looking to learn a little about photography along the way. looking forward to following along
Hey hey, thank you very much! That’s really great you got a Canon, they make awesome cameras! I am looking forward to your pictures ๐
Thanks for checking out the blog – hope you’ll stop by again soon.
No problem Todd, right back at ya! Will do ๐
Thanks for liking and commenting on my post! I really appreciate it. Your blog has a really cool concept and looks pretty great. I got a new camera for Christmas, and your pictures are really getting me excited to use it! Anyway, thanks again!
Hey, no problem! Congratulations on your new camera! I hope you have fun with it ๐ Thanks for stopping by and for your nice comment.
Thanks for stopping by my blog. ๐ Very funny – your description of what you thought Calgary was like sounds exactly like what people think Texas is like, never mind that Houston is more diverse than even New York City! Looking forward to reading more…
Haha that’s funny! I want to visit Houston and Austin one of these days ๐ Thank you for stopping by here and commenting!
Calgary has cowboys??? I never thought they did, what kind of movies did you watch as a kid? ๐ Whenever I think of Canada I think of Dudley Do Right. It works till I make it up there and see for myself. Ever venture out to Nova Scotia?
Haha I haven’t seen any real cowboys since I got here. But before I moved here I heard there was a lot of cowboys. And the only movie I have seen with Calgary in it was that 90’s movie with the Jamaican Bobsled Team haha. Also, never heard of “Dudley Do Right”, what is that?
Oh and never been to NS, but would really love to visit out that way one day! ๐
Dudley Do Right…lemme see…I think he was a Canadian Mountee. It was a movie too with Brenden Fraser. I remember Cool Runnings! I watch it every time it’s on, it’s a guilty pleasure. I want to see L’Anse Aux Meadows, I think that’s in Novia Scotia.
OIC! I’ll look those movies up ๐
Great site neighbour!
Thank you! ๐
Calgary…probably in my top 3 favourite cities in the world! ๐
Thanks for stopping by my blog! It is always appreciated!
High praise! No problem and thanks for stopping by here too ๐

I’ve never been to Calgary, but I think my crazy life will be taking me to Alberta for the summer… as a fellow photographer, and a student, maybe I’d have the chance to shoot with you:)

THANKS AGAIN!
A Canadian, eh, in Calgary. I’ll drink to that!
Cheers! ๐
Thanks for stopping by my blog. I like your blog. I am originally from NS. Ever interviewed anyone in Calgary from there? My friend Grace just moved to Calgary 6 months ago and I am headed to visit her Easter weekend. Can’t wait.
Cool idea. I look forward to reading more of your posts. Do you just ask these questions to anyone you meet? Do some people say no?
Happy writing!
No problem! Thanks for stopping by here ๐ I mostly ask strangers really, and yes people definitely say no! LOL. They say no more than they say yes haha. But it’s still fun. I have even made a friend out of a stranger from doing this blog, so it’s a fun way to meet people ๐
Glad to hear you have made a friend and hopefully you will make more. Too bad there are more no’s than yes’s. Happy chatting and meeting peeps.
Thanks for visiting my blog “Eyes to Heart” and liking my post “Unique …” … I’m a western girl and love Alberta. I generally visit Calgary, camera in hand, about once a year to get my “fix.” … ๐
Hey Dorothy, no problem and thanks for stopping by here! That’s cool you come to Calgary once a year. Maybe I’ll bump into you on your next trip haha ๐

No problem! Thanks for stopping by here ๐
Beautiful portrait below Rob. Love it!
Thank you very much! ๐
Rob, thanks for visiting my O’Canada blog. I was unaware of your People of Calgary site and I love the way you showcase the interviews. Very nicely done and I plan to spend some time browsing these. Best, Brett
Anytime! Thanks for stopping by here too ๐
Like the idea of your blog, many years ago, I had to move to Winnipeg, not quite the same as Calgary, but as a francophone, I was a bit weery…stayed there 5 years, learned quite a bit about the ‘other solitude’ as they say. I did discovered a town and peoples that are very fine, and also often coming from everywhere in Canada and abroad too. So I will follow!
Cool! Ya it’s fun to check out new cities and live in them. I am glad you enjoyed your time in Winnipeg ๐ Thanks for stopping by!
Awesome idea for a blog! Interviewing real people I the city. Who would of thunk it?…..I mean besides you…I look forward to reading much more!
Haha thanks! It’s been fun so far ๐ Thanks for stopping by and commenting.
Hey! Thanks for liking my blog post. The picture of the Calgary skyline is so beautiful.
Hey, no problem. Thanks about the picture ๐
I moved to Calgary six years ago (surprise, surprise, probably 80% of Calgarians are from BC or Ontario!) with no real idea of what to expect and I am now officially and desperately in love with living here! Coming from the most “white” town ever, I love how multicultural it is here. It especially makes for a beautiful classroom. ๐ Loving the photos.
Hi, Sorry for the extremely slow reply. I really thought I replied to your comment when you posted it. No idea what happened there haha. Anyhow, thank you for taking the time to comment and I am happy to hear you are loving your new home ๐
Hey, thanks for liking my blog! I look forward to seeing your Calgary observations, as it is a city with which I am very much acquainted. It was a total culture shock for me, coming from Halifax, but after living there for several years I do miss it sometimes. Cheers!
Thank you for your comment and sorry for the slow reply haha.
You have a very interesting blog and I look forward to following your work! ๐
Thank you for stopping by and commenting Jackie! Sorry for the slow reply. It seems I missed a few people in the mix and only getting the chance to reply now lol.
You’re very welcome! No problem on the late reply – I understand! ๐

Very cool concept for a blog.

Rob, I admire your ability to approach people and not only take great flattering photos of them, but also dig deeper and ask them questions about who they are.
Thank you very much Mark. You are very kind to say so ๐
thanks for liking my latest post, and you’re totally right about Calgary! I loved my years there — lived in Hillhurst, between the river and Riley Park — and have great memories.

Thank you ๐ And no problem!
Thanks for dispelling the misconceptions Calgary undeservedly get, and I’m afraid, ones that seem to perpetuate. I know what Calgary is like… been living here for over 40 years. ๐ Thanks for stopping by Ripple Effects.
No problem! Thank you for stopping by here too ๐
Great blog! I live in Alberta and know Calgary fairly well. ๐
Thank you!
Thanks for stopping by my blog. Love your photography! ๐
No problem & thank you! ๐
Hey, Rob, I came across an article in today’s NY Times about a local photographer in NY who takes photos of people and then interviews them and that made me think of you and your wonderful blog. Here’s the link: “A Fisherman in New York’s Sea of Faces”: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/07/business/media/humans-of-new-york-by-brandon-stanton.html?ref=arts&_r=0 .
I think both his and your efforts are testament to the fact that there is a natural curiosity many of us have about others and a desire for a sense of connectedness even with those for whom we may not always have time to pause and share a moment with. So here’s more encouragement for you to continue with the shared learning and exploration that is the The People of Calgary.
Best, Brett
Thank you so much for your message Brett! Sorry for the slow reply. I have been spending to much time on my other blog http://www.robmosesphotography.com I guess. Your message has inspired me to add another person to the blog. I will have some up this weekend and it will be because of this message ๐ Thanks again!
What a classy blog! Keep up the good work, and thanks for stopping by.
Thank you and thanks for the nice comment!
Best wishes. You might want to penetrate Calgary for those involved in matters of….social justice or people who want to make Calgary a better place to live.
Thanks for liking our blog! You have such a unique and interesting blog going on ๐ I actually visited Canada in the fall of 2012 but missed out on Calgary. BUT! Will definitely visit next time I go. All the best!
Hey, sorry for the slow reply. I was taking a break from this project to focus on some other ones I had going on. However, I am going to picking this one back up now that I have more time again :). Yes please come visit Calgary next time! Just make sure you do it in summer ;).
